What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a mineral composed primarily of silicon carbide (SiC) and was first discovered in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan, after whom it is named.

It is a synthetic gemstone that is often used as an alternative to diamonds in jewelry. Moissanite has a very high hardness, second only to diamond on the Mohs hardness scale, making it very resistant to scratches and wear.

It also has a brilliance very similar to that of diamond and can be difficult to distinguish from it by the untrained eye.

There Moissanite is very heat stable up to 1700°C, the sublimation temperature of diamond.

Brilliance index of 20.4%, higher, although slightly, than diamond (17.2%).

Hardness (9.25) is second only to that of diamond (10).

Refractive index is 2.65-2.69 while in diamond it is 2.42.
